Our efforts are guided by the Safe System Approach, a national strategy that recognizes humans make mistakes—and that the consequences of those mistakes shouldn’t be fatal. The Safe System Approach builds safety into every part of the transportation system, focusing on five key elements:

• Safe People – Encouraging responsible behavior through education, enforcement, and community engagement.
• Safe Roads – Designing and maintaining roadways that reduce crash risks and lessen the severity of crashes when they occur.
• Safe Vehicles – Promoting vehicle technologies and features that help prevent crashes or protect occupants during them.
• Safe Speeds – Managing speeds to match the design of the road and safety of all road users.
• Post-Crash Care – Ensuring rapid and effective emergency response when crashes happen.
